Tarpaulin is a very strong, flexible, water-resistant product, that usually used for vehicle storage cover and built tents or canopy. Other usages also include raincoat material, building material cover, backpack, water resistant shoes, banner, etc. Tarpaulin can also be used in emergency situations such as covering damages windows or leaking roof. Often is the thickness and the material of tarpaulin determine the category of usage("super heavy duty", "heavy duty", "regular duty"). In order to increase its usefulness, the corner of the tarpaulins sheet will often add in grommets to act as an anchor point for ropes to tie down or suspended. Tarpaulin can be very versatile even after produced, one can form different layout by just sewing with a simple machine or glue it using a welding heat gun and also low maintenance and repair cost.
Tarpaulin is usually made up from canvas, jute, silnylon, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, polyvinyl chloride(PVC), mesh and any other water-resistant or waterproof material. Among all the material, polyethylene(PE) tarpaulin are cheapest in most cases. It is waterproof and mildew resistant. In contrast, most canvas has only water-resistance and might mildew in a humid environment. However, the PVC tarpaulin is much more favorable in construction or heavy-duty due to its much more durable than PE tarpaulin, higher tear strength, better anti-aging, better water-resistant and glossy surface. For the comfort of staying and easy carrying, a silnylon tarpaulin are better since it is ultra-light and got a smooth surface. But in pricing term, this material would be quite pricey and not worth for use in construction.
Any plastic-based tarpaulin can also add in UV coating to allow better usage on outdoor. If without proper UV coating, plastic-based tarpaulin will tend to degrade or damaged easily when exposed to a long hour of sunlight. Most of the conventional tarpaulin is not flammable but still burn if exposed to open flames and because of this fire retardant(FR) rated tarps is introduced. FR tarps tarpaulin is make out by adding a certain chemical to the tarpaulin production and produced a tarpaulin that forbids combustion. Fire retardant is not same as fire-resistant as the fire retardant is mean the product or material itself will still melt and burn slowly but will stop burning when the fire source is further away or put out whereas fire-resistant is mean the product or material is able to withstand burning or heating in a period of time without changing its shape and function. It is always recommended to use FR rated tarpaulin in indoors, especially heavy duty industries like welding facilities because FR rated tarpaulin wear out easily on outdoor since this kind of tarpaulin usually does not have a good weather resistant and UV protection. Of course, any extra coating or treatment can be added into the FR rated tarpaulin but more treatment means more expenses so this is not highly recommended unless there is really a necessity.
Tarpaulin can be of different color and different thickness with different usage. Choosing the right tarpaulin for the right job are most important because it can save your cost and also increase your construction site or building safety.
