High Density polyethylene HDPE
Nov 2 2022
Polyethylene(PE) is a common polymer in plastics. It was widely used in our daily life for many different purposes. PE is usually produced in different grade for different usage. HDPE or high-density polyethylene was composed of mostly linear polymers. This linear form has the better characteristic on tighter, denser and more organized structures compare to Medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) and Low-density polyethylene (LDPE). HDPE is a harder plastic with a high melting point and sinks in the alcohol-water mixture. HDPE is also good at electrical insulation, cold resistance, chemical stability, resistant to corrosion, wear resistance and high tensile strength. This material is commonly recycled and has an SPI resin ID code of 2. HDPE can be produced in a different color but the original is translucent. It is widely used in today's, piping, geomembranes, containers, plastic lumber(PL), etc.
In the old days, pipelines are usually constructed from steel. With the advancement of polymer materials, plastic pipes have begun to take over and annihilate the piping industry because of inexpensive substitution and also nature corrosion resistant. Plastic piping usually separates into three type which is solid wall pipe, structured wall pipe and also barrier pipe. Solid wall pipe and structured wall pipe is usually made from HDPE, PVC, or steel pipe. Steel pipe is usually heavy and difficult to work with whereas HDPE pipes are more lightweight and flexible. Although steel pipe can offer better temperature and pressure service, HDPE pipe still get a major spotlight for its versatility, workability, low rate of failure and also low maintenance. Popular HDPE piping usage includes gas transportation, water supply, sewage & drainage system, agricultural irrigation, chemical, oil, telecommunication field, etc. Of course, choosing steel pipe or HDPE pipe still depend on the business environment and nature of the business.
As mention before HDPE are frequently being recycled and after recycling it usually become the same product or other recycle product. One of those recycle products is the plastic lumber(PL). Unlike composite lumber(wood-plastic), plastic lumber is 100% plastic. PL is usually the material that used for the outdoor product. This is because PL is resistant to crack and splitting. In most case, plastic lumber is considered more environmental-friendly because of lesser maintenance like coating and also no wood is used in the process. Furthermore, if the plastic lumber product is damage or destroys it can totally be recycled and reuse. Products that are good for using PL material is the park bench, garden furniture, outdoor flooring, etc. Plastic lumber is not advisable for indoor or house building because of the fire containment are bad and worse than other lumber or composite material. Since it's made from plastic, any form of burning or heating will make it deform and produce toxic gas which is even worse if is in indoor.
HDPE product usually has the following advantages:
1) good chemical resistance
2) wear resistance
3) excellent toughness
