Wall acts as a load carrier for slab, roof, beam and other forms of weight units. At the same time, it offers privacy, security, and shelter against foreign matters. Wall can also be a non-load bearing divider, or a partition that separate spaces and create “rooms” in the building. Wall can be used as a defensive barrier in the countryside, either as a permanent structure or temporary erection for a structure either in outdoor or indoor use. External wall usually acts as the shear wall in which load-bearing strength is required, they play the role as superstructure’s basic while block water, dirt as well as unwanted temperature and noise. The acoustic and thermal insulation features can be enhanced through additional infill materials such as polystyrene foam, mineral wool, glass fiber or others.
Introduction
The wall can be precast, prefab or lay-on-site through a conventional method and infill material can be pre-installed or assembly on site. Thickness for a conventional brick wall is about 230mm to achieve load bearing, while the concrete block wall can be 100mm to 200mm. However, a wall that located behind the sink or a wall with plumbing installed inside will be thicker compared to the normal one. Depending on the functionality of the wall and the design specification, multiple materials can be used to construct the wall and touch up with paint, wallpaper, plasterboard, skim coat, plastering in addition to the insulation layer filler stated. The internal wall is important in term of space division, carpentry installation while external wall supports the overall building structure, security, insulation, and isolation against foreign objects intrusion.
Applications
The following are the type of walls that can be seen in the building industry:
Brick Wall: One of the cheapest and many ancient buildings built by this, simplest to get it done.
Concrete Wall: It can be precast at yard or cast-in-situ by mounting formwork according to design.
Stone Wall: Masonry construction that has thousands of years in history, good strength performance
Timber Wall: Obtaining wood from the tree is easy since olden days, more for architectural wall today.
Glass Wall: Widely specified in modern building design, from skyscraper to landed, windows or door too.
Partition Wall: Non-load bearing divider of spaces, made by thin thickness to create rooms in a building.
Temporary Wall: Mobile or demountable barrier that sometimes used for events or separator of space.
Party Wall: A joint common wall isolating adjacent buildings that can share to neighbor business or residence.
Fire Wall: Usually constructed by reinforced concrete, bricks, gypsum board or drywall partition that are able to stop the fire from spreading for a specific of time.
Block Wall: The most common type is known as Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC), in which manufactured larger in standard size and lighter in weight compared to conventional brick.
Wall Façade: Building’s exterior decorative side, curtain wall that does not carry the structural load but sometimes built to achieve energy efficiency for the building.
Wall Fencing: This type is different with conventional wall and only use to enclose an outdoor area without a foundation underneath, can be built by concrete, wire mesh, aluminum, wooden, steel or others.
